Acoustic Guitar I

The guitar in all its versatility has become the world’s most popular instrument. In this course for the total to slightly advanced beginner, we’ll look at the range, octave, and 16 chords you’ll need to play a jillion songs. We’ll listen to, play, or discuss early Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Rory Block, Iris DeMent, LeadBelly, early Stones, Beatles, Hank Williams, and more. Notes, capo, by 3rd class. Some practice required between classes.  Limit 5 students.

Babysitter Lessons & Safety Training - BLAST

BLAST is a 4 hour course for potential babysitters and parents considering hiring a babysitter. The course covers pediatric 1st aid, household safety, and fundamentals of childcare. It is designed for people 13 and older, their parents, and parents looking to hire a babysitter. BLAST - begin babysitting safely and competently. Price includes class and $10.32 book fee.

The instructor, Josh Wheeler, is Deputy Cheif of EMS/Operations Supervisor, Winthrop Ambulance, Police Officer/911 Dispatcher, Winthrop Police Department, State of Maine Certified Fire/EMS Instructor and AHA/ARC/ECSI Instructor Trainer.

Beginner Adult Karate

This course is designed to show you, the new student, a look at the matrial art of the Japanese and shome of the other martial arts that Ryan Sensei has trained in as well. The physical activity level is set at your leverl so if you have been afraid to do martial arts because of the physical level this activity is for you. Beyond the Point and Shoot Camera

This course will cover the basic and advanced controls of a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera with interchangeable lenses, their function, and how to use them. The camera modes will include: P, Automatic, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual mode and the use of the histogram. Setting the white balance, continuous shooting mode and some of the auto focus modes. We’ll also take a look at the Zone System (Adams) and how it can be used with the DSLR camera, look at some difficult lighting situations and explore B & W photography. 

Bring your DSLR 35mm camera with interchangeable lenses to class. 

Care & Comfort

Children in grief need care and comfort. Children's literature can help. High quality picture books dealing with loss can open doors to conversation and provide space for healing in a natural comforting way. We will read some of these books, discuss methods for sharing them with children, and explore activities that may provide extended comfort. One such book is The Rag Doll Gift a gentle story about loss, but more than that it is about the strength of family, the comfort of traditions, and the boundlessness of love. You will becieve a bibliography of the books we read in class. You will also create and hand sew a patch work fabric heart ornament to take home. All materials included, howeverif you have some special fabrics or items of clothing from a loved one you are invited to bring it to create your ornament. Each participant will receive a free signed copy of The Rag Doll Gift.

Constellations of Fall

Enjoy the crisp Fall air at one of the best places in Maine to view the stars - Winthrop High School! Exploe the Moon through the Newtonian Reflector telescope, identify the planets of Fall: Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus.   Identify the Zodiacal Constellations that are visible this time of year. Consider the immensity of the universe and discuss it to scale using Messier's List of Astronomical Objects. Whether you are a scientist or novice, this is an experience and education you won't want to miss!

CPR/First Aid

This course is designed to prepare students to provide CPR and use an AED (Auto External Defibrillator) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The pourse also provides students with knowledge of emergency response, recognition of medical emergencies, and skills specific to providing emergency cardiac care to adults, children, and infants.

Price includes $6.95 book fee.
